Piano Bench Styles - A Matter of Matching and Taste!

When one buys a piano, one typically gets the bench that comes with the piano. And make no mistake these are usually lovely benches because they match your lovely piano. However, they are not always the most comfortable bench. And they don't always do much for the room (except match the piano). Today, there are so many choices in benches. They come in a variety of finishes, and can be tailored to fit your décor as well as match your piano!

There is a plethora of varieties and styles to suit the most discriminating buyer. When choosing a bench, it is first most important to talk about the basics.
First, let's talk about size: Standard piano benches are usually 14 ½" wide by 30" long. These are designed for the solo artist to sit comfortably and perform. Duet piano benches normally measure the same width (14 ½") but are a bit longer in length (35") to accommodate two people sitting together at the piano. These are chosen most often by piano teachers for use with their students and families, so that a parent and child can sit easily together to learn and study.

Some piano benches are available in a little bit wider and longer bench sizes. But most are pretty close to these standards.

Bench Height: This is probably the most important aspect for the piano player. Correct height allows for correct posture and proper finger placement. A standard size bench is typically 19" high. Because people vary in size, adjustable piano benches are available with the turn of the wrist. And now, even the push of a button, with an electric adjustable piano bench!

Adjustable benches adjust in height from about 17 ½" up to 21". This allows for those who prefer the bench height slightly lower or slightly higher than the standard 19" height found on most non-adjustable benches.

Secondly, let's talk about style:  When first purchased, pianos usually come with standard wood top benches.   These are classic-looking, beautiful wood benches that match the stain, finish and color of the piano. The legs of the bench will most often mimic those on the piano, giving the piano and bench a nice, symmetrical, clean look.

A piano cushion is sometimes added for comfort and to highlight the room's décor.  Piano cushions are available in a variety of custom fabrics and styles.
Although, many adore this classic look, there are also many other styles from which to choose!

When choosing a piano bench style, one must consider four things: The type of seat desired, the leg style that will best compliment the piano or the room, the color of the wood and the finish of the wood.

Sometimes, piano enthusiasts desire a bench with a padded seat that is more than a slip-on fabric pad. They want a bench with an upholstered top in either leather or vinyl. These are available in a variety of colors in either a beautiful smooth or tufted top.

Fabric-topped benches are available as well with customized tops made to match the draperies or wallpaper to really bring your home's music room together!

Piano benches are constructed of a variety of different woods including Birch, Maple and Oak. But all can be finished to look like any desired wood.

Wood color choices are available in all of the traditional patinas. The traditionally elegant wood color of the Steinway Mahogany and Steinway Walnut are easily obtained. Custom colors can be matched if a sample is provided.   Color choices are Ebony, White, Walnut, Mahogany, or Oak. Finishes are available in Satin, High Gloss (think mirror-like), and even unfinished on some benches for those wanting to truly personalize their bench.

Oh! And, then it becomes necessary to decide upon whether you want a storage compartment in the bench or a music cabinet to even further enhance the beauty of your music room!

The styles are abundant! The quality is unsurpassed! The choice is completely yours!
