I probably use my dining room about fifteen times a year. When I chose the furniture for it, I had visions of cosy, relaxed evenings sitting around the table with friends enjoying good food, fine wine and fascinating conversation, all of course in the best possible taste. People would walk into the room and instantly start drooling over the beautiful oak finish on the elegant table and matching chairs. That never happened. Oh, don't get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with my dinner parties; it's just that people (unless they're furniture or antique dealers) rarely notice these things. They will notice place settings, napkins, glasses, centrepiece and everything else about the table, but not the table itself. And that's why I say, why bother?
Dining room furniture needs to be functional rather than beautiful. There, I've said it! At a good dinner party, people don't give a hoot for the table and chairs; primarily they care about the food and drink that's on it and they will pay secondary lip service to the china (if it's unusual) the crystal (ditto) and the silverware. So why pay 00.00 for a cherry wood table imported from England, when you can get a perfectly serviceable, durable and stylish dining set for under 0.00? I waited months until I found exactly the right dining set for my house and, in the meantime, whenever friends or family came round, we had barbeques outside or balanced plates on knees in the living room. No-one complained. That's how most families eat all the time, so I'm assured.
There are occasions when you do need to open up the dining room, but the furniture need not be grand and formal. A cheap dining set will suffice and these can be found in every furniture showroom.
